Grounded Wellness Coaching November Newsletter Holiday Edition

Here we are again getting ourselves ready to celebrate the Holidays.

For a lot of people this includes gathering with family and friends, attending social functions, and navigating how we are going to expend our energy. This will often included a myriad of traditions.

My questions for you are:

Are those traditions still working for you?

Is it time to set new boundaries?

How can you make the season fit your current needs?

I am the middle child of 3 strong woman raised by parents who filled the holidays with family traditions. Starting with Thanksgiving (Canadian) and all the way to Boxing Day. We had family meals, cookie making, movies, games, gifting, light shows etc. So many memories we were lucky to make. Now we are older and the season looks different to us. As a family unit we decided it was time to re write the play book and Covid truly helped move us to the next chapter. Holidays now are more about an activity together vs gifting. We don't live close to one another so that time is more precious to us. Less on the go activities and more laughs around the table. That what we have prioritized and for us it has made the holidays more relaxed in a beautiful way.

If you are looking to build new traditions this year here are some of my top tips:

  1. Serve the food buffet style and have everyone contribute so it takes the pressure off of the #chef
  2. Organize an activity the group can do such as board games, crafts, talent shows, decorating. Bonus if you can keep off of electronics.
  3. Plan a family walk after dinner. not only does this help with digestion but it gives us time to have great conversation.
  4. Make a reminiscing moment where you sit down and share stories of holidays past.
  5. Create a wish jar and have everyone write down their wish for the season and save it to share in a year or at another family event.

Alright everybody, it’s summer. It’s over 100° here in Phoenix daily, and it is just too hot to be covering ourselves up. Most of us are finding ways to relieve the heat, like going to the lake, jumping in the pool, or cooling down with some chilled desserts. My question to you is, have you thought about how you’re taking care of your skin during the heat? Since our skin is really exposed in the summer and we’re wearing looser clothing, we often don’t think about other ways to ensure our skin...

So the new Buzz Word that I see popping up in the wellness world is cortisol. So before I get into my take on this, let’s talk about what is cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which are located on top of your kidneys. It is often called the "stress hormone" because it helps your body respond to stress. When you encounter a stressful situation, cortisol levels increase, giving you a quick burst of energy and focus. This is part of the body's "fight-or-flight"...

I have always been a fan of a good documentary, specifically regarding health. With the recent publication of Netflix’s documentary, 'Hack your Health: The Secrets of Your Gut,' I was more than excited to see what they had to say. First, I had to create space and time so that I could fully immerse myself in the documentary. One thing I wanted to do for myself is not do any background research prior to watching it so I didn’t come in with a biased opinion. By the end I was left with a pleasant...
